City Hall makes good on Garland Avenue promises

Posted: August 14, 2009 at 6:43 a.m.

Apparently, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Want proof? On June 22, 2001, the Northwest Arkansas Times published a story about widening Garland Avenue - specifically, the portion that runs between Maple Street and North Street. Here's an excerpt: "The completed plans put an end to a two-year negotiation involving the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department, the University of Arkansas and the city of Fayetteville to relieve congestion in the area. ... In the original plan, Garland Avenue from Maple Street to North Street was converted into a four-lane street with one turn lane. At a public hearing in March, which attracted about 70 people, the plans were revised so the turn lane was replaced with a 15-foot median that separates two lanes of traffic on each side of the road. The landscaping of the median will be maintained by the university."
