— HORSES GALORE The 46th annual Arkansas State Horse Show will gallop into town Sept. 4-7 at Barton Coliseum. Times are 5-11 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m Saturday and Sunday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday. The event is one of the world's largest open horse shows, which includes food, vendors and riding. The scheduled riding events include barrels, reining, barrel pick-up and horsemanship. PUZZLE MANIA The third annual Arkansas Puzzle Day will be Aug. 29 in Sturgis Hall at the Clinton School of Public Service. The event will feature crossword and Sudoku contests, a "mutli-puzzle funand-games hour" and an educational session on puzzle history, strategies, and tips for solving crosswords.The puzzle contests will focus on accuracy instead of speed The event is free and open to all. SOUL JAMS The Memphis Music and Heritage Festival will be from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sept. 5-6 in downtown Memphis. Blues, jazz, gospel, rockabilly and soul are the types of music featured at the festival, which is presented by the Center for Southern Folklore. Other aspects are a cooking stage to showcase regional and ethnic cooks, storytellers, music and songwriting workshops, craft demonstrations and sales booths and dance performances by drum lines, African dancers, Chinese dancers and salsa dancers. The music acts include Bobby Rush, Sonny Burgess, Joyce Cobb, Kate Campbell and Jason D.Williams. Admission is free. FREE BLUES The Muddy Blues Festival will be from 1-11 p.m. Sept. 5-6 atLaclede's Landing. The festival features three outdoor stages, with a main stage for national headliners and satellite stages for regional and local bands. For St. Louis'only blues festival, some of the participating acts are Joe Louis Walker, E.C. Scott & Smoke and the Larry McCray Band. Tahlequah, Okla.

CHEROKEE SPIRIT The Cherokee National Holiday will be celebrated from Sept. 3-7 with tours of locations that are part of Cherokee history, including the Cherokee National Supreme Court Building museum and Oklahoma's only remaining Civil War era antebellum home. Bus tours are $35 and walking tours are free. The celebration also includes a parade, powwow, fireworks, music, food, children's activities, cultural arts and crafts, an art show, songs performed in Cherokee language, native games and competitions, softball tournaments and a three-on-three basketball tournament.
