U.S. starts Afghan push

Taliban dig in at Helmand town in run-up to vote

Marine Lt. Joe Cull hurls a smoke grenade to help provide cover for Afghan soldiers who were trying to lead women and children out of the way of possible crossfire Wednesday during an assault on Taliban forces in Dahaneh in Helmand province. The women and children got out safely.

U.S. Marines battled Taliban fighters Wednesday for control of a strategic southern town in a new operation to cut militant supply lines and allow Afghan residents to vote in next week's presidential election.

 Rebecca Gwatney, wife of Bill Gwatney who was shot and killed in his office at the Democratic Party Headquarters in Little Rock on Aug. 13, 2008.
