Breaking News: Decatur football dead for this year
Posted: August 13, 2009 at 11:47 a.m.
DECATUR There will be no varsity football team in Decatur this fall.
Citing a lack of numbers, Decatur athletics director Bobby King canceled the Bulldogs season Thursday morning.
The Bulldogs held their first preseason practice Monday, Aug. 4, with only three players reporting.
Head coach Bill Brockert, a 31-year coaching veteran, said a number of athletes are ineligible because of grades. Others who have moved out of the district have contributed to the low turnout.
King had given the football team until Wednesday to recruit enough players for the 2009 season but only five players attended Wednesday's practice. He stated earlier in the week the team needed a minimum of 15 players to go forward with the season.
