Lawsuit filing fees hiked to fund technology for courts

Attorneys file lots of cases to beat deadline

Bridgette Secrist, Washington County deputy circuit clerk, hands papers to a resident after filing paperwork for a case Friday at the Washington County Courthouse in Fayetteville. The state Legislature increased filing fees for certain lawsuits to fund a new statewide, automated court management system.

The cost of filing a lawsuit to collect a bad debt or resolve a civil dispute increased statewide on Aug. 1.
