U.S. jobless rate drops as pace of layoffs slows

Job seekers search on computers at a Worksource office in Portland, Ore. Employers cut 247,000 jobs in July, the fewest in a year, and the unemployment rate dipped to 9.4 percent.
Employers sharply scaled back layoffs in July, and the unemployment rate dipped for the first time in 15 months, taken as a signal by some economists that the recession has bottomed out.
