BREAKING NEWS: Johnson says time was right for resignation
Posted: August 5, 2009 at 5:22 p.m.
Dick Johnson said Wednesday simply that the timing was right for him to tender his resignation as Fayetteville Public Schools' athletics director and assistant superintendent on July 30.

Fayetteville Public Schools announced Johnson's resignation Monday after recently hired Fayetteville Superintendent Vicki Thomas met with several FHS coaches and staff members to inform them of the situation. Johnson's resignation is effective Sept. 30.

Johnson, who spoke to the Times in an exclusive interview Wednesday, said emotions kept him from talking about his decision earlier. But he said he was interested in talking about it some because "in the last couple of days, I've heard so many rumors about myself, you can't believe."

"With the new responsibilities that I took on as an assistant superintendent, I became more and more uncomfortable over the last year. You could see that if you were at any of the school board meetings. In some of the duties, I was out of my level.

"I thought this was the time to do this [resign]. Running a school is becoming more and more complicated each day. It's in the best interest of the school system to have the very best persons on the job that we can."
