SPRINGDALE -- Springdale Har-Ber's locker room was as silent as it was solemn after the Wildcats' 28-7 loss to Fayetteville in Saturday's Class 7A state championship game.

There were tears. There were moments of painful reflection on what could have been. There was frustration as dozens of seniors took off their pads for the last time, only moments after they fell just short of a state title.

    But there was also hope.

In just their second year of varsity football, the Wildcats have established the tradition they once lacked. They won 10 games. Won a conference championship. They advanced to the state championship game.

"I hope this leaves an impact on people," Har-Ber senior quarterback Patrick Calcagni said of the season. "They can see the work required to meet this goal, and I hope they bring home the ring next year and for years after that."

Calcagni was a part of a Har-Ber team that finished 2-8 a season ago. He was a part of the grueling offseason that followed, the unexpected charge to the top of the 7A-West Conference and the playoff run fell just short in War Memorial Stadium.

"If you go back and look at it, it took (Fayetteville) 100 years to get here and win it -- it took us two," Har-Ber coach Chris Wood said. "We're going to come back. This is not a program where we won't be back for another 50 years.

"Our junior and sophomore class have had good seasons for us. We'll hit offseason in January, try to win some games next year and see if we can make another run at Little Rock."
