FAYETTEVILLE -- Former Springdale High wide receiver Damian Williams decided Wednesday to transfer from Arkansas, and coach Houston Nutt has agreed to grant the freshman his release.

Nutt said Williams' father, David, called Arkansas offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn on Wednesday afternoon to inform him that Damian had decided to transfer to another school. Nutt said he didn't know which school Williams was thinking about going to.

Meanwhile, freshman quarterback Mitch Mustain and tight end/wide receiver Ben Cleveland told Nutt in a team meeting Wednesday evening that they wanted to stay with the No. 12 Razorbacks.

Williams started five games this season, and he ranked second on the team with 235 yards on 19 catches. He also had two touchdowns.

Hope he finds whatever it is he was looking for, but this is going to follow him the rest of his career. You think NFL scouts arn't going to be sure to make a note of this? Especially with all the crappy attitudes WRs seem to have in the NFL? Unless he turns into the next Larry Fitzgerald, this will cost him money. "

The SEC is usually a good conference but Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt wouldn't scare anyone from the Big 10. Next year's scheduled is just as week.If Arkansas wants to be one of the big boys then play more decent football teams in out of conference games. Next year they are playing Chattnooga. Is that a Jr. College. Hog Fans are just babies and can't be satisfied. Go get a pacifier because Alabama and Vanderbilt should have won and then we would be talking about 8 wins. You made a high school coach your offensive coordinator to get 4 his 4 players. I would have made him the receiver coach like all other schools. What happens when the Springdale four...I mean three... Will Arkansas auctioned the offensive coordinator's position for more recruits from the same school. "

Damian let the Used Car Salesman Houston Nutt sell him and the other recruits on a high powered passing offense, turned out he got a 1970's run offense that with a great engine like DMAC will get you some yards and wins against marginal teams...But not a Natiaon Championship contender! Good Luck Damian and we know its not about 60 catches but about a change to improve yourself as a WR. Why does anyone go to college? To prepare for thier future!!! I feel sorry for the Springdale guys as well as any other freshman (particularly receivers) that heard deceptive stories about how the offense would change. From what I have heard about Mitch, he's poised, intelligent and a leader, and losing him would be disastrous. Make no mistake; the reason for our running game is McFadden, an incredible once in a lifetime player. He reminds me of the kid who takes over the sandlot football game and does everything to make his team win. Unfortunately, only a fool would think he'll be here past next year, and that would leave us with time wasted that could otherwise have been spent developing a guy with true potential into our next QB. Instead, we run the "wildcat", which has obviously been figured out by quality defenses (LSU, FL), leaving whoever the QB is, sitting on the bench 50% of the time. Why not develop the next QB into a passer, thus opening up the offense, throw D-MAC into the TB position, and watch him pick up 150 yards a game on 12 carries while we pass for 200+. "

The hogs must be able to pass to win the big games even with McFadden and Jones. I just wish Williams had more patience as I think it takes time to develop the offense. There have been times during the season when I sensed Malzahn was over ruled because of the playcalling. It also seemed as if the QB's often did not look beyond Monk for a passing target. "

People have sarcasticly implied that it is not selfish to want to develop your talents to the fullest...fine, but it is selfish to bail on your team before a bowl becuase you are not getting enough looks. Damian was a great down feild blocker, and he played hard every play. The team needed him against Wisconson, and he let them down. For what? It's not like he is going to transfer before the season is over anyway. It really saddens me to say this, as I was a huge Williams fan, but this really shows poor character. No two ways about it. "

Damian did not let his team down; he did what his coach told him to do. I think it is fair for Nutt to make that request, and I think it is fair for Damian to leave before the bowl game. "

However Nutt would not have issued that statement if Williams father (along with others) had not "expressed concerns" to Frank Broyles. My point is that all this should have taken place after the season, not during bowl prep. I am equally upset with the parents of the other two kids. This isn't pee-wee football, and I can't speak for others, but I am down right embarrased by some of the headlines floating around national news services right now. "Mother knows Best?" was on SI.com's front page. That is ridiculous. Once the national columnists, who by the way do not share the dislike for Houston that seems to permeate a large part of Arkansas, get ahold of this story I am afraid for the level of ridicule some of these parants are going to recieve. Not that they don't deserve it, but its still a black mark on the program, and that will always bother me. "

He has been proven wrong. He's only doing that again, and I personally hope he's right this time, no matter where he ends up playing. Damian is one of the few kids that hever has had an ego. But again, it was his decision and if he believes it’s in his best interest to transfer, go for it. Just don’t say that the UA did not do everything possible to keep him. If it doesn't turn out to be, then you transfer. You don't get picked in the draft based on which school you played for, so why do some of you arkansas "fans" think that Williams is selfish for wanting to transfer to a school where he can prove how good he is or isn't. Of course everyone has there own agenda, but personally I think that William's life-changing decisions are more important than your college pickem. As far as coaching goes let Nutt and Malzahn run whatever offense they want. If you don't like that idea and are that unhappy with the coaches then do something drastic- stop going to the games, move and pay some other states taxes, stop buying hog parapharnelia, etc. Talking down on your team and coaches doesn't prove what a great fan you are and it really gets no point across. Leave the program and Williams alone. Good coaches and teams utilize the talent they have and don't base the whole team on one player. Obviously that's not quite the case with Arkansas at the moment, and that player wouldn't be Damian Williams anyways. But maybe if the breaking news was that Darren Macfadden wanted to transfer because he suddenly despised the color red I would understand what the big fuss is about "

" I wonder if Mustain's mommy had a conference with one of her precious little boy's professors out of concern for his academic future. I guess an A in history wont buy her a million dollar home. And, if this kid, ahem a young man, is such a leader, why does his mommy lead his little battles? Sounds like he needs more time in Pop Warner fotball. "

" Let's get real for a moment. The only promise Nutt can truely make to these players is that if they stay they get a quality education from the University of Arkansas. Anything beyond that is gravey. Williams leaving because he's not getting the ball enough is a crock. He's leaving because D-Mc and Jones will see most of the touches next season, and they should, plus Monk is the only reliable receiver we have. Catch some more balls DWill and you become the go to receiver. Put them on the carpet, like you did all year, and watch Monk break receiving records. Good luck, but you'll not get a chance like this for a while. Transfer inside the SEC and be a third receiver for the top teams or go to the Big 12 and play poor mans football. Either way, your loss. " It looks like Williams is transfering to USC. He's going to have his work cut out for him since Carroll recruits stud receivers every year. Williams will be sitting out next year and but if he's as good as people say, he'll be a nice complement to Vidal Hazelton in 2008. The rich keep getting richer. "
