SPRINGDALE -- The question that has been asked for more than a month has been answered.

Mitch Mustain is going to play football in college at ... The University of Arkansas.

And this time he's certain of his decision.

Mustain, the Springdale quarterback who committed to the Razorbacks before the season only to withdraw that commitment two days after the Bulldogs' season ended, made his decision public Monday evening. Mustain told Arkansas offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, his former coach at Springdale High, of his decision Monday afternoon and Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt later in the evening.

"This time around, I've exhausted every option out there," Mustain told The Morning News. "This time, I honestly feel better now than I did in August when I committed."

Mustain initially committed to the Razorbacks on Aug. 15 before a statewide television audience. He later withdrew that commitment in a meeting with Nutt, saying he was uncertain about some issues surrounding an Arkansas program which had just finished a 4-7 season.

On Monday, Mustain said all of his questions about the Razorbacks had been answered -- thanks in large part to a meeting last Friday morning at 12:01 a.m. with the entire offensive coaching staff. The meeting took place so late to avoid meeting during the NCAA recruiting dead period and helped ease any concerns the top-ranked quarterback in the country had about the direction of an Arkansas offense which struggled in the passing game last season.

Mustain told The Morning News that Arkansas was his first choice all along, but that he had " some things that I wanted cleared up."

Mustain also met with the coaches again later in the day on Friday, including new Razorbacks quarterbacks coach Alex Wood. Part of that discussion involved Wood telling Mustain that Arkansas would only use the former Bulldog next season -- foregoing his redshirt year --if he supplants current Arkansas quarterbacks Casey Dick, Alex Mortenson and Robert Johnson.

Wood and Malzahn, the former Springdale coach who was hired by the Razorbacks in December just days after his team captured the Class AAAAA state title, also met with Mustain in an in-home visit Sunday evening, but that meeting was less about football than it was about simply enjoying dinner and watching highlight videos --with the bulk of the on the field discussions having already been completed.

With his decision out of the way, Mustain said Monday night he was ready for the phone calls to end and for things to "get back to normal."

He's also looking ahead to suiting up for the college he's never lived more than 20 minutes away from in his life, taking time to thank both the Razorbacks coaches and Arkansas fans who were patient with him while he made "the most important decision of my life."

"I'm excited just to get up there and get started," Mustain told The Morning News. "Honestly, I wish I could be up there for the spring I'm so ready to get going."

" So what's this rumor that Wally Hall was talking about? Herring didn't like Malzahn's game plan and Uncle Frank had to step in? Nutt and Malzahn had a disagreement on the sidelines Saturday night about who was calling the plays? Is this true? If it is, the light at the end of the tunnel is a train, not the end of the tunnel. " Do you think the switch from Johnson to Mustain PRE-PLANNED or just a "spur-of-the-moment" thing? Also, how does Johnson get moved to WR and not the 2nd or 3rd QB especially with Dick having back problems... Seems like another Tavaris Jackson senario to me!!! "

" According to Nutt, Johnson was given a choice and he chose to be a receiver. He said that the pressure was very immense. The people got to realize that other coaches, i.e. Phil Fulmer will use that as a way to steer recruits from Arkansas. It just is not right go boo a college kid who is playing for the love of the game and according to reports, is a class teammate and individual. I believe that Mitch should start, but Johnson should not had gone through that ordeal. Think about it, Kodi Burns is wanted by many schools, he may have decided to leave the state. It will be a hard pill to swallow comoe February when the recruiting class is rated near the bottom because of the stupid people that booed during the game. Also, Wally Hall need to stop gossipping in the paper. Tell it Like it is does not mean you do not have to be a responsible journalist. Wally needs to step down. "

" I'm not a Wally Hall fan, since English is the only language I speak and usually I can't understand Wally. But newspaper columnists owe their loyalty to their readers, not to their sources. Wally doesn't work for the Razorbacks (although you often wouldn't know that), and what we need in Arkansas is a little less worship of the athletes and a little more acting like grown-ups. If there's a dispute between the coaches, and Wally or any other reporter finds out about it, his responsibility is to tell the reader about it. That's why we buy newspapers. "

" Seeing the ball actually flying through the air, via a bona fida gameplan at Arkansas, is to most of us fans much like Republicans watching in giddy ecstasy as Bill Clinton's tried to skirt around the meaning of "is" during his historic congrssional inquisition. What a sight to behold!! I love it!! I could care less about how you got the job Mitch, God bless your arm, always (and the gameplan of course). Finally, the universe has balance. " Mustain was the best QB since Matt Jones, and i believe that he would have won the SEC for us (Arkansas fans). I also feel that when you make a commitment you should honor it, no matter what is going on. "
