Two photo exhibits set at Pulaski Tech

A pair of photographic exhibits will begin this month at the University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College's Windgate Gallery, and an opening reception for the exhibits will feature a book signing and speakers.

The exhibits are "Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement" by photographer Danny Lyon, to be displayed Jan. 16-April 14 in the gallery, and "A Peace of My Mind: American Stories" by photographer John Noltner, to be in the Charts Lobby Jan. 26-Feb. 9.

The exhibits are free and open to the public during posted hours.

The opening reception covering both exhibits will be 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Windgate Gallery on the Pulaski Tech campus, 3000 W. Scenic Drive in North Little Rock.

Lyon photographed some of the civil-rights movement's most historic moments during the 1960s. His work includes coverage of the 1963 March on Washington and the aftermath of the white supremacist bombing the same year that killed four girls ages 11-14 at the majority-black 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.

Noltner's exhibit is a multimedia project he began in 2009 built around the question "What does peace mean to you?" The answers are told through portraits and personal stories.

The Jan. 26 reception will include talks by Noltner and one of the storytellers featured in the exhibit, Little Rock Vice Mayor Kathy Webb.

More information about the exhibits is available online at uaptc.edu/charts.

NLR offers workers weight-loss classes

A small number of North Little Rock city employees have an opportunity to work as a group on losing weight to start the new year, courtesy of the city government.

The city is offering free, weekly Weight Watcher program classes to all full-time and part-time employees starting today. Friends and family members of employees can also attend but will pay the regular Weight Watcher class rate.

The classes are offered in conjunction with the city's Parks and Recreation Department. The 30-minute classes will be held at midday every Tuesday through March at the North Little Rock Community Center, 2700 Willow St.

A minimum of 15 employees must be in attendance for any class to be held.
