A man was fatally shot early Thursday in a carjacking outside an apartment complex.

The shooting happened about 4:30 a.m. at Chapel Ridge Apartments, which are just outside North Little Rock's city limits at 5900 McCain Park Place.

On Thursday afternoon, authorities identified the victim as 29-year-old James Ward of Jacksonville.

Pulaski County sheriff's office Lt. Cody Burk said Ward was shot during a carjacking and died a short time later at a hospital.

Burk said the suspects are a white man who might have a tattoo of a star close to his eye and "possibly two or three black males."

The sheriff's office said it is also looking for Ward's vehicle, a champagne-colored two-door Ford Explorer.

As investigators collected evidence on the complex's east side Thursday, children wearing backpacks and holding textbooks walked past crime-scene tape toward a nearby bus stop. The tape blocked much of the parking lot on the east side as well as a playground and picnic area on site.

At sunrise, some residents at the complex stood nearby watching the police activity. Several said they were unaware of what had happened.

Two who spoke with an Arkansas Online reporter said they were startled by a loud gunshot shortly after 4 a.m.
