Highfill approves money for fire station work

HIGHFILL -- The City Council heard department reports and approved spending money to finish the fire station and to trim and remove trees from the city park.

Council members approved spending up to $1,100 to trim park trees and to remove two dead trees.

Also approved was allowing the Fire Department to use $52,495 in its savings account from Act 833 money, the department equipment fund and the Bryant Fund to complete work on the fire station. Fire Chief Gene Holland estimated another $57,719 is needed to complete the work.

Fire Chief Gene Holland said wallboard has been put up and money to purchase insulation came from a recent Fire Department benefit.

Work has been ongoing for a couple years, but completion has been delayed by a number of setbacks, Holland said.

Holland estimated the department receives about $20,000 annually from the state and another $20,000 to $25,000 from fire dues.

Holland said Insurance Services Office staff had visited and he was certain the city's 5 ISO rating would improve.

Also discussed was the need for a new employee to help with the city's mowing and to assist the Water and Sewer Department and the Street Department. Mayor Stacy Digby said he would like to keep the mowing work in-house rather than contracting it. Much of the mowing is being done by a volunteer.

Butch Wiand, water and sewer supervisor, reported the Silver Meadows subdivision applied for 26 building permits that will be issued when the city receives a $2,000 from the Burman Company.
